When to Go — Kenya Safari Seasons at a Glance
The best time to travel depends on what you want to see, your preferred destinations and your budget. Here is a simple guide to the main safari seasons across Kenya and East Africa.
Great Migration in the Maasai Mara
July – October
Large herds move into the Maasai Mara, with the possibility of dramatic river crossings. This is peak season, so early booking is essential.
Best for: First-time safari travellers · Photographers · Bucket-list journeys
Calving Season in Tanzania
January – March
Wildebeest gather in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region to give birth, attracting predators and creating exceptional wildlife activity.
Best for: Kenya–Tanzania combinations · Wildlife photographers · Repeat safari travellers
Dry Season Safari
June – October
Wildlife is often easier to see as animals gather around water sources and vegetation becomes less dense. This is one of the most popular periods for safari travel.
Best for: Families · Groups · Big Five viewing
Green Season
November – May
Enjoy greener landscapes, fewer visitors during selected periods, strong birdlife and attractive seasonal value. Festive and Easter dates may still command peak rates.
Best for: Birdwatchers · Photographers · Value-conscious travellers
Year-Round Safari Options
All months
Destinations such as Amboseli, Samburu, Laikipia and many Kenyan conservancies can offer rewarding wildlife experiences throughout the year.
Best for: Flexible travellers · Short safaris · Business and event extensions

It depends on what you want to see. July–October is peak Great Migration season, with river crossings in the Mara — book early. June–October overall is the dry season and offers the best general game viewing. January–March sees wildebeest calving further south in the Serengeti and Ndutu area, drawing strong predator activity nearby. If you'd rather avoid the crowds, November–May (excluding festive periods) offers greener landscapes, lower rates and excellent birdlife.
