On 27th October, our team at Kendirita Tours joined over 23,000 other runners at the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon (SCNM) 2024. The race saw impressive performances with participants from around the world competing across seven race categories: the full marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km), 10 km, 21 km wheelchair race, 5 km Family Fun Run, CEO Challenge, and a 10 km Corporate Challenge.
The 2024 Nairobi Marathon not only showcased athletic prowess but also focused on community initiatives and environmental sustainability. Our team was thrilled to be a part of this noble event and in this article, we share some key highlights and takeaways from the race.
Legacy
The 2024 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon enhanced its legacy as Kenya’s largest single-day sporting event, celebrating 21 years with a dynamic route along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass. The race offered runners majestic views of the Nairobi National Park with a backdrop of the city’s skyline, showcasing Kenya as an ideal tourism destination.
Community and Inclusivity
Inclusion and community remained key pillars at the center of this racing event. In addition to elite athletes, the marathon also saw numerous amateur runners, people living with disability, and corporate teams participating. Satellite races had also been earlier held in October in Kisumu, Kakamega, and Mombasa, making this year’s event one of the most extensive in reach and participation.
Sustainability
The 2024 SCNM placed a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability through several initiatives designed to reduce its ecological footprint. The event incorporated robust waste management strategies to handle trash produced during the race. Recycling stations were set up along the marathon route and at the finish line, encouraging participants and spectators to sort and dispose of waste properly.
Impact
Since its maiden race in 2003, the proceeds from the marathon have focused on eradicating preventable blindness through the ‘seeing is believing’ initiative.
To broaden its impact, in 2019, the marathon incorporated the Futuremakers initiatives: a program that aims to address inequality and foster income inclusion among the younger generation.
The activities of the initiative include environmental efforts like tree planting to beautify and sustain green spaces in Nairobi. It also offers free medical camps that provide essential healthcare services, particularly in underserved communities. This blend of sports, environmental awareness, and healthcare outreach has become a hallmark of the marathon. It continues to attract not only athletes but also volunteers and sponsors committed to a greater cause.
